As a volunteer, you'll work with young people in our surf therapy programs on the Surf Coast and Mornington Peninsula, supporting them in and out of the water to build confidence and life skills.

Join our diverse team of 160+ volunteers, aged 16 to 65, and enjoy the benefits of community, meeting like-minded people, attending events, and staying active.

  • Mentoring is a structured and trusting relationship between a young person and a caring individual who offers guidance, support and encouragement.

  • Our programs are participant lead, meaning we shape our support to best suit the young person you are matched with. Supporting young people means listening, encouraging and helping them achieve their goals. Some days you could be in the water helping pick the best waves, others you could be flexing your sand castle building skills.

    It's all about showing up, being flexible and having fun. Everyone has something unique to bring so sign up today, you have more to give than you know!

  • No. You do need to be comfortable in the surf and be a good swimmer, but we teach you all you need to know to help out a young person in the water.

  • You will need to attend an Ocean Mind Mentor training session before you start. Don't worry if you haven't worked in a support role before, the training will prepare you for your time as a mentor.

    Before your first session with Ocean Mind you will need a Working with Children check and Police Check

  • However long you want to commit. If you’re mentoring on a 6-week program, we ask you to commit to the full 6 weeks. If you’re a surf club mentor, pick and choose the sessions that work for you.

    Mentoring shifts go for 3 hours on Saturdays and Sundays. We also have opportunities for mid-week programs so get in touch if this is something you are available for.
