Tales From the Ocean

Jack began his journey with Ocean Mind in early 2024 after being referred to our Six Week Swell programme by his school. Jack had recently been diagnosed with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder and was struggling with mental health challenges, difficulties in family and peer relationships, and low self-esteem. These challenges were affecting both his school and home life, making it difficult for him to feel confident or accepted.

When Jack first joined Ocean Mind, the idea of trying a new activity was incredibly daunting. He had developed a belief that adults didn’t like him, a perception shaped by constant reprimands at school, home, and in other groups. However, when Jack arrived at the beach for the first time and was greeted by his mentor, he felt an immediate sense of safety and belonging. The warm, welcoming environment of Ocean Mind was exactly what he needed.

As the weeks went by, Jack not only honed his surfing skills but also discovered a newfound love for the ocean. More importantly, the programme helped him build confidence, self-belief, and trust in others—qualities that had been eroded by his previous experiences. These changes in Jack’s outlook began to positively influence his sense of identity and his relationships with those around him, including his family.

Through Ocean Mind, Jack found a place where he is supported, and celebrated, and where he truly belongs. His parents have noticed a significant change in him. They are now more confident in encouraging Jack to participate in new activities, seeing the joy and confidence that surfing has brought into his life. Jack’s mum shared, “I am really happy that he has found a healthy, nature-based activity he loves. He is so happy when he is in the water, and the bonus is that the staff and mentors were all so welcoming and friendly!”

Jack’s journey with Ocean Mind didn’t stop with the Six Week Swell. He has continued to engage with the Surf Club and, at just 11 years old, has even expressed interest in becoming a future Junior Mentor. His story is a powerful reminder of the positive impact that a supportive, caring community can have on a young person’s life, helping them to see beyond their challenges and embrace their potential.
