About Ocean Mind
More than surfing
We believe all young people deserve a supportive environment where they can feel safe, experience self-confidence and build meaningful connections. Yet many are navigating mental health challenges, social isolation, disability or unstable home lives that make growing up tougher than it should be.
Ocean Mind is a Victorian not-for-profit that supports young people through evidence-informed surf therapy across Greater Geekong, the Surf Coast and Mornington Peninsula. By combining the challenge of learning to surf with trusted relationships, mentoring and guided reflection, we create opportunities for young people to discover their strengths, build confidence and develop practical skills that support them both in and out of the water.
Every session is about more than surfing. It's about creating an environment where young people feel seen, supported and capable of taking on new challenges. As they progress, they build resilience, strengthen their connection with others and gain confidence that extends far beyond the beach.
Our programs are delivered by trained staff and volunteers who meet young people where they are, recognising that every individual brings different experiences, strengths and support needs. Our approach is informed by research, shaped by experience and continually refined through the outcomes we see in the young people and families we support.
For many participants, Ocean Mind doesn't end when the program finishes. Through volunteering, community events and ongoing connections, we aim to create a lasting sense of belonging—because meaningful change is built through supportive relationships and a community that continues to show up long after the final session.

What is Surf Therapy?
Surf therapy combines the benefits of the ocean with structured activities, supportive relationships and guided reflection to promote positive mental health and wellbeing. While surfing is the vehicle, the real focus is helping young people build confidence, develop life skills and strengthen their connection with others.
At Ocean Mind, every session is designed to be safe, supportive and enjoyable. Young people are encouraged to challenge themselves at their own pace while being supported by trained staff and volunteers who build trusted relationships throughout the program. Along the way, participants develop skills that extend well beyond the beach, including resilience, communication, self-confidence and emotional regulation.
Our approach follows a four-phase model that guides each participant's journey. From building trust and feeling safe, through learning new skills and increasing independence, each phase is designed to help young people grow in confidence while experiencing a sense of belonging and achievement.
Our programs are informed by current research in surf therapy, outdoor learning, positive youth development and mentoring, alongside years of practical experience delivering programs for young people across Victoria. We continually evaluate our programs and learn from participant and family feedback to ensure our approach continues to evolve and meet the needs of the young people we support.
